Trassic sand ripples descovered River Leven

I decided to go back to the river  Leven on the boarder of Cleveland and North Yorkshire today to try and discover where the sand ripple fossil my daughters had found earlier had come from.

1 The red outline marks the preserved Triassic sand ripples

2 The white outline shows one of the preserved Triassic sand ripple sections.

 3

4 Mercia mudstone above the sand ripple fossils

 5

6 The sand ripple fossils seem to run in a west to east direction although I can not be totally sure, as I had no compass.

7 - The river has cut through the sand ripple layer many years ago but slabs can still be found in the river.

8 - The black outline shows the sand ripples exposed from the upper Triassic deposits, at least 5 metres in depth.

9 The yellow outline shows the excavated  sand ripples to the left.

7 - The larger piece has been discoloured by the river and weathering, and may even have a secondary mineral coating,  but after breaking an under layer free I can say it is certainly Mercia mudstone.

8 - The examples  in images 8 - 10 show Triassic fossil sand ripple marks from North America, I have not yet viewed a Triassic example from the UK.

11- This image shows how the earth looked at the approximate time the sand ripples were made.

Marton West beck ( Fairy Dell ) deposits including gravel bed

1- The grey organic clay is outlined in red

2 - I could be wrong but I believe the deposits above the gravel bed are laminated.

3 - Close up of the grey clay containing preserved organic material including Hazel nuts.

4 - The gravel bed is outlined in black, as with all other locations note how flat it is, and its depth averages 250 - 300 mm thick as at most other locations.

Peserved Equus bones

The image above shows some of the preserved Equus bones i have excavated or found in the beck valleys of south west Cleveland.

The bones include five skull pieces one intact, the assemblage represents at least nine different Equus, and all were found or excavated within a 2.5 mile radius of Stainton Village Middlesbrough Cleveland. only one of the pieces shows any sign of attention from Humans, Predators, Scavengers, or the Elements.  I no longer pick up peserved Equus  bones as there are so many in the beck Valleys of this area.
